Headway Review

Headway is an up-and-coming forex and CFD broker founded in 2022 that shows a clear ambition for rapid expansion.  The South Africa-based broker attracts clients with promises of aggressively low spreads and commissions, high leverage and appealing bonuses and promotions. Headway offers the two most popular trading platforms in the industry, MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, and has its own mobile app to add to that. The Headway website is functional and available in multiple languages – English, Indonesian, Arabic, Thai, Portuguese, Malaysian, Spanish, Vietnamese, Japanese and French. The broker offers customer support via live chat and maintains an active social media presence. In its short existence, Headway has managed to win some industry accolades in the Africa and Asia region.

This may sound too good to be true – and closer inspection does show reasons to be suspicious. First of all, there are uncertainties surrounding the legal status of the broker, which we will describe in detail in the second section of this review. In short, we are not entirely sure exactly which legal entity we are working with when we become clients of this broker. Signing up for an account with Headway is far too easy – it’s even possible to log in with a Google or Facebook account. Only by confirming an email address, you could deposit funds into your wallet and start real trading, with identity verification only required when withdrawing funds. This goes against transparency norms and anti-money laundering policies followed even by most offshore brokers. This very easy registration combined with attractive no-deposit bonuses can mislead inexperienced people into thinking that trading financial instruments is much easier and risk-free than it actually is.

The payment methods available for depositing and withdrawing funds are not the most established and secure, moreover there is a difference between the advertised and actually available payment processors. The cost of trading is also not as low in practice as advertised.

The South African license that Headway has does not entitle this broker to accept clients from all over the world, but there are no technical restrictions to register from any country and start trading. There is a generic Risk Disclaimer on the Headway website which states that the broker does not accept clients from countries that are blacklisted by the Financial Action Task Force on мoney laundering (FATF) and that the website is not directed to the residents of countries where such financial services may violate the laws or regulations of the land. But the responsibility for complying with these constraints is transferred entirely to the customer.

Let’s take a detailed look at what this emerging broker offers and what red flags we found when compiling this review so you can make an informed choice about whether Headway is the right choice for you.

Headway Licenses and Regulation

Before becoming a client of a forex broker, it is more than advisable to carefully inform yourself about the legal and regulatory status of the company that manages it. Understanding the regulatory environment is crucial for anyone involved in Forex trading for several key reasons that affect both the security of their investments and the overall trading experience. Forex markets are particularly vulnerable to fraudulent activity due to their vast size and global nature. Reliable regulatory frameworks help protect traders by ensuring that brokers adhere to strict operational standards and ethical practices. Understanding these regulations helps traders choose brokers that are compliant, thereby reducing the risk of falling victim to fraud.

In most cases, in the footer of the broker’s website you will find detailed information about the legal entity or group of companies behind the brand, as well as details about the regulatory licenses it has.

The footer on the Headway website states that this website is operated by a company called Jarocel Pty Ltd , which is based in South Africa and is authorised and regulated by the local financial regulator, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), with license number 52108.

Headway legal details

A check of the FSCA database shows that there is such a licensed company with these registration details. Jarocel Pty Ltd also appears in the registration information of the trading software used by Headway.

Headway FSCA registration

But here we face an ambiguity that is cause for concern. The company name Jarocel Pty Ltd does not appear anywhere else, and most importantly does not appear in the Client Agreement, Privacy Policy and other key documents.

Headway Client Agreement

The documents in question can only be found in the “About Us” section of the website. There is only a link to the Privacy Policy on the home page, and the account registration form does not require agreement to these binding documents.

The Client Agreement and other legal documents do not specify either a company name or an applicable jurisdiction. The only document that mentions the name Jarocel Pty Ltd is the Anti-Money Laundering Policy. But this document states that the broker’s brand name is HW. But in all other documents, and on the website itself, the brand is listed as Headway. In addition to this, the Risk Disclaimer on the homepage of the website is in the name of Headway Inc.

So at the end of the day, we’re not really sure which company we’re a client of and which is the applicable jurisdiction whose laws govern the broker-dealer relationship. With that very important disclaimer out of the way, let’s still look at the regulations in place in the jurisdiction in which Headway claims to be based.

Although FSCA regulations are less stringent than those in the European Union, Australia, or the United States, they still incorporate significant oversight functions. For instance, South African forex brokers must maintain a certain level of capital to ensure their stability and protect their clients during adverse market conditions. The required capital varies based on the broker’s license type and the services they provide. For example, Financial Services Providers (FSPs) that handle client funds are required to have a higher minimum capital, such as ZAR 5 million (approximately USD 300,000) for a Category I FSP. Brokers are regularly audited and must comply with ongoing oversight measures. The authority has the power to impose penalties and sanctions, including fines and license revocation, on brokers who fail to meet regulatory standards. Furthermore, the FSCA provides a formal mechanism for clients to lodge complaints against regulated brokers, adding an extra layer of security for traders.

The FSCA actively monitors brokers for any signs of manipulation or unethical behavior to ensure fair and transparent trading conditions. Unlike in the EU or the US, the FSCA does not enforce strict leverage limits. In the EU and UK, leverage for major forex pairs is capped at 30:1. Brokers in South Africa often offer higher leverage ratios, which can increase potential profits but also amplify risks for traders.

In South Africa brokers must segregate client funds, but additional protective measures such as compensation schemes might not be as robust as in other jurisdictions. Overall, while the regulatory framework in South Africa does provide for the safety and transparency of forex trading, it is generally perceived to be more lenient, particularly concerning leverage and capital requirements, compared to the tightly regulated environments of the EU, UK, and Australia. This difference can affect the level of risk that traders in different regions are exposed to.

Nowhere on Headway’s website or documentation does mention guarantees such as segregated bank accounts for client funds. However, the Client Agreement specifies that negative balance protection is available, which ensures that the trader cannot lose more money than he has in his account. But overall, we do not have confidence that Headway provides an acceptable level of user protections.

Headway Trading Software

In terms of trading software, Headway is a much more compelling forex broker than in terms of regulatory oversight. Headway offers a choice between the two most popular trading platforms in the industry, MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5). MT4 remains the preferred choice of many traders for reasons we will discuss below, but keep in mind that MT5 allows you to more fully benefit from the services of this particular broker. While both platforms can be used in all types of trading accounts offered by Headway, only using MT5 allows you to trade CFDs on stocks and indices, as well as some cryptocurrencies. In total, MT4 allows you to trade about 100 financial instruments offered by Headway, while the MT5 platform allows you to trade over 330 instruments.

MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is a popular trading platform primarily used for Forex trading, as well as for trading CFDs (contracts for differences) and futures markets. Developed by MetaQuotes Software and released in 2005, MT4 is favored for its advanced trading capabilities, robust security, and accessibility for traders of all skill levels.

Headway MT4 Desktop

MT4 has a user-friendly interface that allows traders to manage their trades and analyze the markets efficiently. It includes multiple chart setups and supports various time frames to help traders make more informed decisions. The platform is equipped with a comprehensive set of technical analysis tools. It includes over 30 built-in indicators and more than 2,000 free custom indicators, as well as 700 indicators available for purchase. These tools help traders analyze price dynamics of financial instruments.

One of the standout features of MT4 is its ability to support automated trading through software programs called Expert Advisors (EAs). EAs can automate trading strategies, allowing for trading to be managed automatically based on predefined conditions. Users can create their own custom indicators and scripts, and the platform supports the MQL4 (MetaQuotes Language 4) programming language, which is designed specifically for developing trading robots and technical indicators. A huge community of traders has developed around MetaTrader, as well as an ecosystem of third-party tools, further expanding the software’s capacity and functionality.

Headway MT4 Web

The platform provides robust security. It encrypts the data between the trader and the server with a 128-bit key, and it also supports the use of RSA digital signatures. You can be sure your trading and personal data are well-protected. MT4 includes advanced communication tools for brokers to post messages and communicate with traders directly through the platform, which can be very useful for getting real-time updates and support.

The platform has a web version that can be accessed via an internet browser, in addition to fully-fledged desktop applications for Windows, Mac and Linux. MetaTrader 4 also offers mobile versions for iOS and Android, which allows traders to manage their accounts from smartphones and tablets, providing flexibility to trade while on the go.

The platform allows access to market news and an internal mailing system to keep traders updated with the latest economic events.

Overall, MetaTrader 4 continues to be a preferred choice for many traders due to its comprehensive features, customizability, and strong community support. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced trader, MT4 offers tools that can cater to both automated and manual trading strategies.

MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is the successor to MetaTrader 4, developed and released by MetaQuotes Software in 2010. It’s designed to cater to a broader market, including not just Forex but also stocks, commodities, and futures. MT5 is equipped with more advanced technological features compared to MT4 and offers additional functionalities aimed at professional traders.

Headway MT5 Desktop

Unlike MT4, which is primarily focused on Forex trading, MT5 allows trading in several financial markets from a single account. This includes stocks, futures, and CFDs, providing traders with extensive opportunities to trade different instruments. MT5 includes more technical indicators, graphical objects, and timeframe options than MT4. It features 21 timeframes, over 80 technical indicators and analytical tools, and has an integrated economic calendar directly on the platform. significant feature of MT5 is the Market Depth functionality, which shows the price quotes from different market participants in real-time. This is particularly useful for day traders and those using scalping techniques.

The platform supports MQL5 (MetaQuotes Language 5), which is more powerful and efficient than MQL4. MQL5 allows for faster execution, more advanced EA (Expert Advisor) capabilities, and easier programming of complex trading strategies. However, this means that scripts developed for MT4 cannot be directly implemented in MT5.

Headway MT5 Web

For those who develop and test algorithmic trading strategies, MT5 offers a powerful strategy tester that supports multi-threaded, multi-currency, and real tick data testing. It also allows the visualization of testing results, providing more insights into the effectiveness of a strategy.

MT5 provides more advanced charting capabilities, allowing for more thorough analysis. Traders can open up to 100 charts simultaneously, and the charts come with 21 timeframes and over 80 built-in technical indicators and analytical tools. Integrated directly into the platform, the economic calendar keeps traders apprised of major economic events that can impact the market, without needing to use an external website.

MT5 offers four types of order execution: Market, Instant, Request, and Exchange. This variety allows for greater flexibility and precision in executing different trading strategies. MT5 supports both netting and hedging systems. While MT4 only offers hedging, MT5 allows traders to choose the system that best suits their trading style and regulatory requirements. Like MT4, MT5 has a strong community and plenty of resources such as free indicators, expert advisors, scripts, and community forums where traders can share strategies and tools. MetaTrader 5 addresses many of the limitations of MetaTrader 4, offering more powerful features and wider capabilities across different markets. Its tools and resources make it suitable for both beginner traders and more experienced professionals who require robust, multifunctional software.

Headway offers both platforms in a desktop version for Windows and Mac OS, a web version that can be accessed through an internet browser, and mobile apps for Android and iOS devices.

Headway MT5 vs MT4

Separately, Headway offers its own mobile trading app, which is also available on Google Play and the Apple Store, as well as an APK file for direct installation, and which can be integrated with the MT4 and MT5 mobile apps.Headway’s mobile app shares an nearly identical interface with the broker’s client portal and allows registration and full management of trading accounts, including depositing and withdrawing funds.

Headway Account Types and Trading Conditions

Headway offers three types of trading accounts that provide tailored options for traders with different experience, capital and preferences – Cent, Standard and Pro. All accounts share low initial investment requirements and high leverage.

As stated, registering for a Headway account is excessively easy – it only requires you to confirm an email and choose a password. It is also possible to log in with a Facebook or Google account. Most brokers, including many offshore companies, require more detailed information to establish a client’s legal compliance, financial standing, trading experience and investment intentions. In more tightly regulated jurisdictions such as the EU, the registration process also involves completing a questionnaire designed to establish the client’s experience and knowledge of trading financial instruments and the risks involved.

Upon registration, you will automatically receive one live and one demo account of your choice with the MT5 platform. You can then register additional demo and live accounts with different combinations of pricing model, leverage and trading software.

Headway requires a pretty low minimum deposit – just 1 USD for a Cent account, 10 USD for Standard and 100 USD for Pro. The opportunity to start trading by risking a small capital is convenient for both beginner investors and seasoned traders who want to test the services of this broker before committing more significant amounts.

Headway trading account types

The base currencies for the Standard and Pro account can be USD, EUR, IDR, JPY, THB, NGN, ZAR, BRL or MYR, while the Cent account is limited to USD as the base currency.

Cent and the Standard Account share a pricing model where the trader pays only a floating spread. The Pro Account offers another model where the trader pays a fixed commission combined with a lower spread, which could potentially be 0. The fixed commission is 1.5 USD per side per lot, or 3 USD per traded lot.

For Cent and Standard accounts, Headway advertises a floating spread starting at 0.3 pips, with a different minimum spread for each individual financial instrument. For benchmark major currency pairs such as EUR/USD this minimum spread stated is 0.4. But across trading platforms we see a higher, albeit still competitive level of 0.8-0.9 pips. For other popular currency pairs, the spreads we have seen on the MetaTrader platforms are much higher than advertised on the website – 1.5 pips for GBP/USD and over 2 pips for USD/JPY.

Headway minimal spreads

Floating Spread Accounts are often preferred by casual traders and those who do not have a fixed trading schedule, allowing them to trade whenever they prefer, accepting the spread that is available at the time. The main advantage of a fixed commission structure is cost predictability. Traders know in advance what their trading costs will be per transaction, which is particularly beneficial for those using trading strategies that require precise cost calculations, like scalping or high-frequency trading. These accounts are ideal for high-volume traders, scalpers, and those using automated trading systems that can benefit from knowing exact transaction costs and exploiting tight spreads.

Volume traders and scalpers might prefer fixed commissions because of the lower spreads and predictable costs.: If you trade during off-peak hours or when spreads typically widen, a fixed commission account might save on costs. Ultimately, the decision depends on a trader’s specific needs, trading frequency, and strategy preferences. Both account types have their place in the forex market, catering to different styles and approaches to trading.

Cent accounts are designed primarily for beginner investors who want to gain experience and confidence without risking significant capital. Instead of needing hundreds or thousands of dollars to start trading, a Cent account allows you to begin with much less. Depositing USD 10 into a Cent account would show up as 1,000 cents in the trading balance. This account type reduces the risk per trade because the value of each pip is significantly less than in standard accounts. This makes it easier for beginners to trade without risking substantial amounts of money. Cent accounts are particularly useful for educational purposes. They allow new traders to experience live trading, test strategies, and learn about market conditions without the pressure of losing large amounts of money. After gaining enough experience and confidence with a Cent account, traders often transition to more standard account types with larger trade sizes and potential for bigger profits.

All of Headway’s account types allow trading of over 300 instruments, including forex, cryptocurrencies, metals, energies, stocks, indices, FX indices. But as discussed in the previous segment of this review, the full list of instruments is only available when using the MT5 platform. If you are relying on MT4, this deprives you of the ability to trade stocks, indices and some cryptocurrencies through this broker.

Headway tradable instruments in MT5 platform
Headway tradable instruments in MT5 platform

All accounts have a fairly low margin call of 30% and zero limit and stop levels, which gives the trader more room to take advantage of market movements, but can also encourage riskier behavior.

Headway also offers very high levels of leverage, and depending on the instrument traded and the balance of the account, leverage can even be unlimited. Regulators in the EU, UK, Australia and the US impose much lower limits on the leverage available to retail clients. The reason is that leverage is a double-edged sword – on the one hand it increases potential profits, but on the other it carries the risk of excessive and sudden losses.

If the equity or balance of all the trading accounts of a client is below 1,000 USD, he can use leverage up to 1:2000 when trading currency pairs and metals. If he has traded at least 5 lots, the leverage becomes unlimited. The unlimited leverage option is removed if the account balance is between 1000 and 5000 USD. Higher exposures go with a reduced maximum leverage, with a capital of more than 100,000 USD, the maximum leverage for forex trading is reduced to 1:200.

Headway leverage

These levels only apply to trading currency pairs and metals. For other asset classes, the broker imposes lower maximum leverage levels, although these are still much higher than for regulated brokers. When trading cryptocurrencies and indices, the maximum leverage is 1:400, when trading energy the maximum leverage is 1:200, and for stocks it is 1:20.

Headway leverage

Headway also maintains its own social trading platform, which is another service aimed primarily at casual and inexperienced traders. Copy trading, also known as social trading, is a service offered by some forex brokers that allows individuals to automatically copy positions opened and managed by another selected trader. This method of trading is particularly popular among less experienced traders who may not have the confidence or knowledge to trade on their own.

Headway Copy trading

On a copy trading platform, users can view the performance, trading strategy, risk level, and historical success of other traders. Based on this information, they can select a trader whose strategy fits their risk tolerance and investment goals. Once a trader is chosen, the user’s account gets linked to the account of the selected trader. Any trades executed by the chosen trader are automatically replicated in the copier’s account. Copy trading does not guarantee profits, and the risks are similar to any trading activity. The performance of copied traders can change, potentially leading to losses.

The trader whose trades are being copied receives a fee or a percentage of the profits they generate for their followers. In this case, the strategy provider can set a commission starting from USD 1. Providers must also have deposited at least 100 USD into their Headway account. Headway, as a copy trade platform, charges a monthly 15% fee from the trader-defined commission.

Headway Deposit and Withdrawal Methods

One area where Headway does not make a particularly good impression is the payment methods through which you can deposit and withdraw funds from your trading accounts.

For starters, the website lacks detailed and clear information on payment methods and deposit and withdrawal terms. Therefore, it is not clear whether the available payment methods differ across regions and jurisdictions.

On the homepage of the website we see a statement that the available payment methods include credit/debit cards and cryptocurrencies. But in the deposit menu itself, the choice is between cryptocurrencies and two e-wallets – Perfect Money and AstroPay. The withdrawal options are the same.

Headway deposit menu

Headway says it does not charge its own fees for depositing and withdrawing funds, which is standard industry practice. But it’s also standard for most brokers to offer more payment methods, including direct bank card swipes, wire transfers, and more popular payment processors like PayPal, Skrill, or Neteller.

Minimum and maximum single deposit and withdrawal amounts vary depending on the payment method. When using Perfect Money, the deposit amount can be between 1 and 900,000 USD. For AstroPay, the range is 5 to 900,000 USD, and for a cryptocurrency deposit, the range is 12 to 10,000 USD. The same limits apply for withdrawals. The only exception is the Litecoin cryptocurrency, which has different withdrawal limits – between 5 and 100,000 USD.

The broker promises to process deposit requests within 15-30 minutes and withdrawal requests within a maximum of two business days. Withdrawals must be processed via the same payment system, same account, and same currency that were used to deposit the funds. If a trading account uses multiple payment systems or multiple wallets, the funds must be withdrawn in proportion to the amounts deposited. The withdrawal of profit and Partner commission must be made to a personal bank account or e-wallet only.

If a client makes a deposit, does not trade and/or there are signs of trading not aimed at making a profit and/or the company’s income from the client’s trading operations is less than the compensated commission for the client’s deposit / withdrawal, and makes a withdrawal request, such requests will be rejected with a comment to contact the customer care team. In this case, the Company reserves the right to unilaterally charge the commission for the client for the entire time of using the Company’s services.

Headway Bonuses and Promotions

Brokers in more tightly regulated jurisdictions such as the EU cannot offer bonuses and promotions. The reasons many regulators prohibit this practice are varied, but among the most important is that bonuses can encourage more imprudent and risky trading behavior. Because Headwayis not subject to such regulatory restrictions, this broker offers bonuses, promotions and prize games to its customers. Before we look at the offers, we will note that it is very important to always carefully familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions associated with a particular promotion before taking advantage of it.

The most attractive bonus offered by this broker is a no-deposit bonus of 111 USD. This bonus is available for both new and existing Headway clients. In order to take advantage of the offer, you are required to register a special bonus account which has the parameters of a Standard account with the MT5 trading platform, leverage of 1:2000 and USD as a base currency.

Bonus funds are available for a period of 7 business days during which they can be freely used for trading, but not withdrawn. After the promotional period ends, the bonus is removed from the account balance. If any profits are made from trading the bonus funds, these profits remain in the account balance but can only be withdrawn if the minimum volume requirements are met. There is no time limit for you to withdraw the profit. The amount of lots to trade for withdrawal equals your bonus profit divided by 3. Afterwards, you can either withdraw your profit or transfer it to your trading account. For example, if you’ve got 30 USD profit in seven days, withdrawing the whole amount requires you to trade 10 lots. If you want to withdraw a part of it, let’s say 3 USD, you need to trade 1 lot.

All clients of the broker have the opportunity to take advantage of the permanent “Giftshop” promotion. Any real account can request to participate in the promotion through the  Personal Area. For every lot traded, the customer earns one “Crown” and if enough crowns are accumulated, they can exchange them for a prize ranging from t-shirts and electronic devices to scooters and cars.

Separately, Headway organises periodic competitions through which active traders can receive additional prizes. At the time of writing this review, the Golden May promotion was active. Similar to the Giftshop promotion, Golden May contest participants receive one point for each lot traded. Participation requires you to deposit at least 50 USD within the promotional period and trade at least one standard lot. At the end of the competition, participants receive prizes depending on their place in the leaderboard. These prizes include various electronic devices as well as a cash prize of 1 USD for each lot traded. The maximum amount of the cash prize is 10 000 USD.

Another monthly broker promotion is called Dreamway and requires engagement with Headway’s Facebook page. Prizes are not predetermined and the broker selects the monthly winner at their discretion.

Headway also maintains a monthly promotion for its partners in the Introducing Broker (IB) programme. Partners of any status can receive a bonus depending on their performance in a calendar month. When the monthly net deposit is over 100,000 and the partner’s clients traded at least 800 lots, the partner receives the maximum cash avert of USD 3000.

Headway Tools and Education

Unlike the big names in the industry, Headway does not offer comprehensive information and research services that make the broker’s website a single hub providing everything the trader needs.

Educational material on the Headway website is limited to a series of articles on the basics of forex trading. Larger brokers often offer webinars, video tutorials, glossaries, e-books, seminars and other ancillary materials, oriented not only to novice investors, but also to more experienced traders who want to expand their knowledge.

Headway education

Headway also does not provide the additional tools and information resources that active traders need. In this broker’s website we find only a basic economic calendar, which does not provide anything more than the one integrated in the MetaTrader platform. There is no forex calculator or other facilitating applications. Headway also does not partner with providers of trading signals, technical and fundamental analysis, or providers of third-party extensions to the MetaTrader platforms.

Notes from the author:

In this line of work, I have come across many fake brokers, which has taught me to spot irregularities such as lack of company name and applicable jurisdiction in Terms and Conditions and other legal documentation. The overly easy account registration is also more than suspicious. Deposit and withdrawal options that boil down to cryptocurrencies and obscure payment processors like Hong Kong-based Perfect Money are again something that doesn't inspire confidence in me. In Headway's case, we have a combination of all these things. I couldn't say that this broker is a scam because there are many indications that it is not. The responsibility for the broker is taken on by a company that is licensed in South Africa, so its activities are subject to some regulatory oversight. Having MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 trading platforms, as well as a proprietary mobile app is also not something you will see with fictitious brokers these days. Headway maintains an active social media presence, engages in on-line client reviews and supports affiliate programs. Because of this, I attribute the ridiculously easy registration (you can even log in with a Facebook or Google account) and other ambiguities to this emerging broker relying on an overly aggressive policy to attract clients in a highly competitive environment. The same considerations may explain the attractive-looking bonuses and promotions, high leverage and low margin calls. However, all this significantly increases the risk levels when trading through this broker. You should therefore consider the pros and cons carefully before choosing Headway as your broker. And it might be a good idea to test the broker with a Cent account first.
